Dumb Type
Profile
Founded in 1984, Dumb Type is comprised of artists from diverse backgrounds—visual art, music, video, dance, design, computer programming and other fields—all contributing to a great variety of stage and installation productions over the years. They have maintained an open-ended creative style with no fixed director and a changing roster of members participating in each new production as part of their on-going exploration of ever new possibilities in artistic collaboration.
Dumb Type’s first large-scale solo exhibition, “DUMB TYPE | ACTIONS + REFLECTIONS,” was held at Centre Pompidou-Metz (France) in 2018 and Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2019-20. The latest performance “2020” was premiered at ROHM Theatre Kyoto in 2020. In 2022, Dumb Type created a new installation “2022” for the Japan Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, welcoming SAKAMOTO Ryuichi as a new member. Also, Dumb Type solo exhibition at Haus der Kunst in Munich was held in the same year. In 2023, “Japan Pavilion Exhibition in Tokyo—From the 59th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia | Dumb Type, 2022: remap” was held at the Artizon Museum in Tokyo, and “Dumb Type AUDIO VISUAL LIVE 2022: remix” was presented at ICC.
