Moppet Renga

September 14, 20, and 21, 1996

Outline

If computer displays were to become incredibly large, what kind of pictures would we place there? If several pointers were to appear on one screen, allowing the computer to be operated by more than one person, would we then draw pictures together? Or, would we just get in each other’s way? While this interface is one that is easily imagined, it had never been attempted before. We developed such an interface (paint system) and then had a large group of children (moppets) try it out. One of the main motives behind this project was the concern that while computers are being introduced into the school system, they have been unable to make significant contributions in the area of collective learning, one of the primary missions of a school education. Computers are tools to expand the abilities of individuals. Yet, we haven’t adequately probed the ways computers can contribute toward group activities and collective projects. The Moppet Renga Workshop was an effort to go beyond a simple focus on the development of interface systems to include broader research on interface usage in groupware situations. The workshop’s paint system was produced under the direction of ANZAI Toshihiro (computer artist), the interface system under MORIWAKI Hiroyuki (media artist), the sound system under FUJII Koichi (computer music researcher), the costumes under MAKINO Junco (fashion designer), and system coordination under KIHARA Tamio (research engineer, NTT Information and Communication Systems Laboratories).
