Carsten NICOLAI

Carsten NICOLAI was born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, now Chemnitz. He is a sound and visual artist, whose work takes place in a transitional area between music, art and science. Throughout his career, he has been represented in the most important art exhibitions and institutions, such as documenta x and the 49th and 50th Venice Biennales. Under the pseudonym Alva Noto, he has performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London. As a sound artist, he focuses on the field of electronic music and is one of the co-founders of the label ‘raster-noton. archiv für ton und nichtton.’ In 2015, NICOLAI scored Alejandro González IÑÁRRITU’s film ‘The Revenant,’ which was nominated for a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Grammy and Critics Choice Award.
He is a professor at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, specialising in digital and time-based media.
