Modern society has advanced by the fundamental principles of monolithic universality, linear progress, and vertical hierarchy. Utopia is nothing but its logical point of arrival. Following the master narrative of modern society's grounding laws, we have been progressively trying to approach the image of the future.
However, recently people have begun to express serious doubts concerning the nature of those foundational structures. We might say that urban design's mission of planning is bringing about its own self-contradiction. This is especially true in today's intellectual climate of post-modern critique which insists that all fixed grounds are untenable. The modernist vision of utopia has been dead for some thirty years and in its wake, alternative Utopias will be born.
These utopian visions will develop auto-poetically and require multiple modes of interactivity and urban imagination whose elements should be understood as undecidable, contingent and aleatory.
"The Mirage City - Another Utopia" by Arata ISOZAKI will serve as an experimental model for imaginative conceptualization of a Utopian City for the 21st century - the new age of informatics.
