A lecture by Geert LOVINK, a media critic and theorist from Amsterdam. LOVINK has gained a reputation as a “media activist,” working energetically in the Internet, BBS systems, free radio, publishing, and other means of media expression. He is actively developing a movement to critique theories of network culture that are overly optimistic and from an outsider’s point of view. LOVINK, who commands a broad field of expertise, focused on his recent theory of electronic networks (“Net Criticism”), making critical reference to the pioneering theories of Jean BAUDRILLARD and Paul VIRILIO, and introduced concrete examples from various network movements. This was a valuable chance to encounter some of LOVINK’s theoretical works that have yet to be translated into Japanese.
