An open workshop that took place as part of ICC’s educational activities. Thirty high school students used discarded objects such as household electrical appliances, in other words junk, to produce original artworks that flash and move. The workshop began with the participants breaking into groups of six and collectively developing plans for an artwork. Planned by art critic MORIOKA Yoshitomo, the artists MATSUMURA Taizo and MORIWAKI Hiroyuki supplied advice. While appreciating these artists’ works, the participants used them as references from which to expand the image of their own works. Each team included an advisory tutor during the actual production. One of the themes of the workshop, “light and movement,” served as a fixed element in all of the works. Lights were used under the strict condition that they behave as if part of a domino lineup. On the last day, the pieces were assembled in front of the participants’ teachers, schoolmates, friends, and families and a presentation of the “domino effect” was conducted. While delving into the theme of their creations, each one of the participants experienced the pleasures and challenges of group work.
