Program Four: Network - Media Design for “Cooperative Creation”

Monday, September 5, 1994

Outline

Collaboration is a creative and cooperative activity that generates common understanding. Communication media, which until now made its goal the transmission of information, is currently evolving into a media that aims at “collaboration” by merging with groupware technology. The design approach of CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work), which utilizes the characteristics of image transmission researched by ISHII and others, was introduced. A video presented the progression from TeamWorkStation design to ClearBoard
design as well as a vision for the future. This program considered the relationship between media and its internal structure and the possibility for growth within Japan’s cultural climate.

Speaker: ISHII Hiroshi (Senior Research Engineer, NTT Human Interface Laboratories)
