‘Ninohashi Renga’ Inspiration Network

August 30, September 6, and 8, 1994

Outline

Renga (linked images), signifies a collaboration achieved through image communications over computer networks. From multiple perspectives, this workshop considered the process of renga, the production of images created simultaneously by large numbers of people via LAN (local-area network), which are then amalgamated in intricate combinations on the cybernet. Under the direction of artist ANZAI Toshihiro, a group of 20 participants were all linked to one base image and then each created their own artwork. The links came in many forms including direct mappings of the images themselves, outline samplings, and through a succession of themes. The earliest compositions produced through this collaboration were labeled first generation works; with the next works comprising the next generation, then cyclically, generation upon generation, a network formed through these successive productions.
