“Resonant Echoes” [2023]

Strangeloop Studios (David WEXLER, Ian SIMON)

“Resonant Echoes”

Outline

In “Resonant Echoes,” Strangeloop Studios explores how the music of SAKAMOTO Ryuichi allows listeners to cut across time. From the explorative innovation of his work with Yellow Magic Orchestra and releases like “Riot in Lagos” to the deep nostalgia of his works for solo piano and film scoring, sound becomes a vehicle of temporal transportation for the listener.

“Resonant Echoes” seeks to understand and visualize this connectivity, exploring resonance as both a harmonic and cognitive concept. Using spectral analysis, AI-driven visuals, and generative real-time recombination, each note in SAKAMOTO’s “Before Long” (1987) becomes a temporally dislocated “memory object,” forming the nodes in a vast network of interconnected times and spaces. Visualizing this nodal network reveals similarities to the neural pathways of memory and consciousness.

By rendering consciousness as an evolving and interconnected network, the presumption of consciousness as finite dissolves. “Resonant Echoes” is a tribute to SAKAMOTO Ryuichi’s work, but also an exploration of the human cognitive experience, inviting the audience to reframe their relationship to memory and consciousness.

The work of Mr. SAKAMOTO has always resonated strongly with Strangeloop Studios, and their approach to visualizing music. Strangeloop Studios has worked with a variety of artists, from BLACKPINK to Flying Lotus to David GILMOUR (of Pink Floyd), designing the visuals for their stage shows - the transportive effects of Mr. SAKAMOTO’s compositions reflect a synaesthetic ethos that has been a guiding principle in the studio’s work.
