“Mid Tide #3” [2024]

FURUSAWA Ryu

Outline

A wide horizontal video of a seascape is projected across three large organic LED displays, slowly and continuously changing over time. The changes occur so slowly that they are difficult to notice; however, when attention is redirected to the work after some time, the image presents a significantly different appearance than before. It resembles the ebb and flow of tides, prompting reflection on the relationship between the passage of time in the artwork and the spatial transformation of the image.

The wave footage displayed on the screens is a real scene captured from a fixed position over an extended period. FURUSAWA explores new ways of describing spacetime by manipulating various display methods for video as time-based visual data.
As part of this approach, he considers the video as a sequence of continuous still images, expressing each frame as a layer that overlaps in the depth direction, creating a three-dimensional structure.

Time flows through this three-dimensional space in the depth direction. The playback of the video can be described as a process that moves through this three-dimensional space as a continuous series of cross-sections from front to back.
In contrast, this work intentionally deviates from such a linear progression of cross-sections in the depth direction by simultaneously presenting multiple cross-sections. This can be described as a video with an axis of change that induces spatial transformation, differing from the temporal changes we typically experience.
