The "Elevator Girl" series of works were made between 1994 and 1999. However YANAGI does not just portray 'elevator girls' and department store 'usherettes' with stifled individuality, homogenized appearance and trained behavior as a form of simple social satire. While on the one hand projecting the silhouettes of usherettes, these girls' looks suggest at once a completely different aspect. Within the blocked up spaces of modern architecture, they stand in casual poses and with melancholy expressions. From their attitudes the viewer can guess the fluctuations of an undecided mind somewhere between satisfaction and discomfort about the environment one has been thrown into.
