"Juggler"
1997

When Barsamian was entrusted with the task of creating a work to be part of the [ICC Collection ], he actually tested various types of telephones such as those with headphone receivers. The artist researched the subconscious reaction of human being in the present time where telecommunication technology progresses. The telephone is "the most intimate symbol of electronic interface that ties humans and machines," and the transforming image of the telephone expresses "hope" and "caution." The receiver tossed into the air transfigures into a baby bottle, milk, dice and bones. Finally the bones slowed down by a parachute returns to its original receiver shape, barely making it to the hand of the "Juggler" (human). The movement is repeated like the myth of Sisyphus. At present this is the only Barsamian work that takes a repetitive up and down motion as its form. "Juggler" demonstrates a certain attainment of Barsamian 's sculptural animation.
