Preface |

Traditionally, people have created
"expressions" by using elements from reality (subtraction).
In other words, expressions have been extractions from real phenomenon.
People emphasized part of reality and used (defined) signs about which
there was a common understanding to transmit a message. What is the
distinguishing feature of the leading forms of media in today's multimedia
world?
Today media makes "additions" to existing forms of expression.
For example, two-dimensional images are being converted into three
dimensions, voice is being added to image, and movement is being added
to text.
How is this reality captured in the genre of media art? This month
we will explore future directions for media as a starting point for
thinking about and using subtraction and addition in expression.
