“INSIDE” [2016]

Playdead

“INSIDE”

Outline

Both of the two works “LIMBO” and “INSIDE” by Danish developer Playdead revolve around characters in the form of anonymous looking boys, and illustrate a beautiful yet at once cruel world that includes situations in which the protagonists are accidentally captured or even die. Without being given sufficient background information, players enter the stage of the game, and operate those boys as they head somewhere, driven by something that doesn’t seem to be their own intention, and eventually enter a “human” realm out of the ordinary. Indie games that mostly feature non-photorealistic visuals establish worlds based on an entirely different kind of logic, and these two works by Playdead can be understood as accomplishing this in the most condensed way.
