"VinylVideo"

Gebhard SENGMULLER

Gebhard SENGMULLER is using /VinylVideoTM/, the "first ever media that made possible the recording of imagery - moving images and sound-on analog records", to present a quasi-archeology of motion picture recording and playback media. Like the vinyl disk replaced the cylindrical record played on early gramophones, and prevailed until the advent of digital media such as the CD, SENGMULLER presents the vinyl disk as a predecessor of magnetic tape and digital technology as it is used for image and sound recording today. As unique as the fictitious history of technology is the retro-futuristic way of presenting it.
Vinyl records can carry data of low-resolution black and white images, and monaural sound of equally low quality. "VinylVideoTM" can be played on regular record players, and made visible on a TV screen using a particular converter. The ability to access any point on the disk easily indicates new possibilities that could make "VinylVideo" an attractive tool for VJs and DJs.
Artists who have provided material so far include Vuk COSIC, Alexej SHULGIN, and Perry HOBERMAN, and in his presentation at this exhibition SENGMULLER shows works the likes of exonemo and TANAKA Katsuki have committed to /VinylVideo/. |
