A camera chases three runners racing down a foggy road in a small
German village. The street scenes and trees have been created through
computer animation, while the three runners are clones of images compiled
from a real person jogging on a running machine.
In this work, perspective has been reversed, so that distant objects
appear larger, and shrink in size as they get closer. This rule also
applies to the three runners, so that the runner who appears largest
is actually the one that is farthest away. Because this phenomenon
is never experienced in real life, the human mind continuously tries
to reverse this optical trick. As a result, the work achieves a remarkable
impact and tension.
The work also reminds the viewer of a bad dream in which no matter
how far one runs, no destination is ever reached and the surroundings
continue to vanish.
