Excerpts from Fourteen Deviation to the Challenge

The composition is based on a simple sequence that, over a 45 minute period, is continuously transformed according to a predetermined process. This mechanism's so-called normal function is derived from a piano solo according to chance elements, and deviates 14 times (the work is made of 14 sections) in different directions, gradually being destroyed. In terms of technology, this work was composed using a super high speed processor (4X) developed by IRCAM, and a computer progrun (MAX). The computer, by following the piano part in real time, conducts a complicated conversation.
