"Le Tombeau de Freddie / L'Internationale" 2009

This new work examines the theme of this exhibition, "Invisible power—The Spirit Residing in Things," from the perspective of "ghosts residing in media." Media technologies have been born one after another since the latter half of the 19th century, but how do these interfere in and confuse our axiomatic world? Moreover, the work borrows the form of a "haunted house" to show in a very easy-to-understand way just how parallel the relationship is between these experiences and experiences that have traditionally been called "spirits" or "ghosts" using photographs, recordings, telephones, and other everyday media technology as examples.

Formant Brothers
Formant Brothers is a composition cooperative started by MIWA Masahiro (elder brother) and SAKONDA Nobuyasu (younger brother) in 2000. They have been focusing their interest on "voice and machine" and working with artificial voices generated in real time with their original formant synthesis system. Formant Brothers received an Honorary Mention in the Digital Music category of the 2009 Prix Ars Electronica for "Le Tombeau de Freddie / L'Internationale," a "Roku-gaku" (a term coined from the Japanese words for "record" and "music") work that examines the nature of music by having the "The Internationale" revolutionary anthem sung in Japanese by a rock star who has passed away.
