"ENDSVILLE"
2001
Roland BRENER + TAKASHIMA Yoko

Catalina Island lies a short distance in the ocean off Los Angeles. Avalon, nestled under impressive mountains, is the only town. For many boaters it is the reachable short-term retreat. Large number of weekend vessels are received by the harbor-patrol and each allocated a buoy, tied in neat rows: basically an aquatic parking lot. Walking the mountain path overlooking the anchorage at dusk I had an overview, looking down on all the boats. From each boat glowed a fluorescent aura, emanating from the TV sets tuned in by the occupants. Flickering patterns of light made obvious how many were watching the same programs.

This technologically controlled conformity married to individual notions of privacy led me to the concept of "ENDSVILLE". I saw the total community as a future fantasy orchestra: seen from space, each home an instrument played to a digital melody by the private occupants.

Yoko inspired me to see the possibility of relating "ENDSVILLE" to different contexts. By applying it to a subjective glimpse of the recent history and expansion of Tokyo, we were able to collaborate on a work that in our minds speaks a universal language. We believe this work is made poignant by recent historic events and our hope is that our collaboration, a drop in the ocean across cultural and geographic boundaries, contributes, in it's humble way, to deeper tolerance and understanding.
