Preface
There have been many films and videos
dealing with artists and works of art which inhabit the borderlands
between art and science; so many in fact that they have come to constitute
a field of their own. Sometimes considered objects for artistic appreciation
and sometimes materials for teaching science, they have their share
of fans. The works presented here, however, are slightly different
from these science/art films. They are drawn from my personal collection
of materials that I have assembled over thirty years of writing about
and planning exhibitions in this area. I have chosen to present those
works which are of particular relevance to the theme of this exhibition.
Among them are rare images of the pioneers of the art and technology
movement from fifty years ago, documentary works recording the bizarre
and beautiful behavior of natural phenomena, and even images put together
on mathematical themes. All of them are valuable records. I also have
pieces on perception, on mathematics and art, on cosmic art, and many
other themes in the field of art and science. But I have had to leave
them out this time. (Sakane Itsuo)
