- "Putishestvie (Journey from Petersburg to Moscow)": a book of travel with
the emphasis on the evils of serfdom and Tsarist absolutism.
- Description of incident
- 1790 Russia: "Putishestvie (Journey from Petersburg to Moscow)" was one
of the most famous books suppressed by the Tsars. Catherine II declared
that the book was an attempt to propagate the ideas of the French
Revolution.
- Results of incident
- 1790 Russia: Catherine II ordered the edition of "Putishestvie (Journey
from Petersburg to Moscow)" to be burned by the public executioner. The
author was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to ten years
in Siberia.
