Jose Antonio Nieves Conde - Films

Description of the Art Work

Perhaps the most well-known of his censored films is "Surcos" (1951). "Todos somos necesarios" ("We Are All Necessary") (1957), a film about the scarcity of housing depicted through the life of a family evicted from their home, was also censored.

Description of incident

The Ministerio de Informacion y Turismo (Ministry of Information and Tourism) forbade the showing of the film because it gave a wrongful impression of housing in Spain. The film's export to France was also prohibited, as well as its participation in the Festival de Karlouy Vary.

Results of incident

The director's protests resulted in the board allowing him to remake the ending, but the film remained censored.
