Preface

The New School is an educational program founded in 1993. It includes regular lecture series and technical classes aimed at fostering the development of artists and designers in new fields. The organically linked curriculum includes a variety of programs: basic classes open to anyone, thematic classes on timely topics, practica, programs for children, programs throughout the year for mastering the basics, and programs with definite direction for professionals. The system also provides for going back and forth between those programs.
New School 8 is a workshop series for professionals. With the product designer FUKASAWA Naoto as their instructor, participants study the relationship between the information that exists in the environment and design and address the question of reality in design.
Through the series of eight workshops, students re-cognize things existing in our daily life and study their implications. Discovering factors linked to design in the infinite affordance characteristic of objects in their environment, they go on to try their hands at creating objects.
The work resulting from these workshops are on display at the ICC during the post-workshop exhibition period.
