Preface

Since the 1997 opening, the Open Studio has been an attempt not merely to exhibit finished works but to introduce the processes by which they are created, for a deeper level of understanding. The latest offering in the Open Studio features the Tangible Media Group, led by Hiroshi ISHII, from the MIT Media Laboratory. The group's work is directed at giving digital information tangible qualities. ISHII's basic concept of graspable bits, bits that can be directly sensed through the skin, guides his research on "Tangible Bits," an interface that will provide a physical embodiment of digital space. His goal is to transform the body, indeed the physical environment itself, into an interface with cyberspace. This exhibition, during which visitors to the ICC may directly touch and grasp the work in the Open Studio, is an opportunity to experience and give thought to the digital world and expanding media of the future.
