York der Knoefel was born in Potsdam,
Germany in 1962. He learnt photography and after exhibiting in many
photographic exhibitions in Europe, in particular in Germany, he moved
to New York. In recent years he has created installations that combine
photographs and videos. These works use conceptual techniques to present
the meaning hidden behind images and are modeled on what is these
days a rather precious orthodox video art context.
Participating in ICC's first artist in residence program, Knoefel
is producing and exhibiting a sound installation based on "music
and time" called "gene ration time factor." This work
is an experiment in creating an unpredictable music concrete space
by recording impromptuperformances by approximately 30 international
musicians from various genre, including Japanese court music, and
then replaying these simultaneously in the gallery. By moving towards
and away from images of these musicians, visitors will be able to
enjoy making their own symphony.
