- Cruz Varela is a poet and human rights activist who is a leader of a
Cuban democratic coalition called Criterio Alternativo, a known group of
anti-Castro intellectuals.
- Description of incident
- A government-sanctioned mob staged a protest in front of her house for
three days, protesting her spreading of anti-government propaganda. They
stormed into her house, dragged her down the stairs by her hair and
forced her to eat the "Criterio Alternativo" propaganda leaflets she had
distributed. She was arrested on November 19, 1991 and imprisoned for
two years.
