“dead-in-iraq” is a performance within the US Army produced online FPS* game “America’s Army.” DeLAPPE utilized the game’s chat window to upload matter-of-fact information concerning soldiers that actually died in the Iraq War. By overlapping aspects of death in a game and in real life, DeLAPPE draws a portrait of a society in which wars and guns are everyday reality.
* Short for “First Person Shooter.” FPS games are action games in which players move freely within the game environment from the protagonist’s perspective, and fight with bare hands or using weapons.
