Preface

The exhibition "NEW MEDIA NEW FACE 02" will be held from Friday, April 26 to Sunday, June16 at the NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC], Gallery B.

NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC] embraces the mission of supporting young artists aspiring in the field of Media Art, who have found only limited opportunities to present their creations to the public. Developed under the theme of "NEW MEDIA NEW FACE," this effort consists of planned exhibitions of experimental new works and other forms of art which have failed to attract attention to date.
Under the conditions which exist today, the occasions and venues for presentations by such artists have diminished considerably. This is a highly regrettable trend, and one which moves in inverse proportion to the sharp increases in both the number of students learning Media Art and the schools which teach such subjects. In this sense, the sponsoring of these exhibitions is an exceptionally vital undertaking, and in a very real sense should be considered indispensable for the future of Media Art itself.
Introduced in "NEW MEDIA NEW FACE 02" are four artists currently in the limelight for making dynamic endeavors to instill greater levels of energy and progress into their own approaches to Media Art. They are INOUE Hisako, SUGIHARA Yuki, TAMURA Satoru and FURUIKE Daisuke.

INOUE Hisako is active in the creation of visual installations, a medium she uses to blend the fragrances and odors of oranges, chocolate and other aspects of the olfactory sense with information embodying the sensations of touch, hearing and sight.
SUGIHARA Yuki pursues research and development of so-called "Water Dome" -- space crafted to envelop human beings with water. In this work, she proposes a new genre of media space designed to facilitate experiences of the "water immersion" sensation.
TAMURA Satoru devotes himself to hand-fabricated mechanical sculptures, a vehicle which provides a unique means of depicting "machine movements." In these creations, he gives expression to the unconsciousness state stretching between modern-day machines and human beings.
FURUIKE Daisuke marshals the techniques of "morphing" to probe the chain linked transformations in images of Christ, mountains and other "symbolic" entities, defining the changes of essential substance inherent in such objects.

At "NEW MEDIA NEW FACE 02," these four distinctive artists will unveil works rich in youthful vigor and variety, certain to project vivid images of the underlying inspiration destined to propel the realm of Media Art forward in the 21st century.
